CANNAREGIO is the only Sestiere of VENICE where the locals are visible & influential – and the FONDAMENTE NOVE marks the busy & lively waterfront. So to say: the authentic backside of Venice. For me downtown is always more exciting than uptown – so I spent many many mornings at the bar of ALGIUBAGIO, standing among the local VAPORETTO staff, having one freshly prepared PANE COTTO after the other (washed down with a PROSECCO from time to time) and trying to listen to the local gossip and rumors. In summertime I loved to have a corner table on the logoon ponton with the noisy waves below me and the spectacular view to the lagoon and the CEMETERY ISLAND, which is worth an extra visit on a sunny afternoon. And a special tip: don’t take an overcrowded Vaporetto from the Canale Grande – start at the Fondamente Nove to discover Venice & the Lido. On a summer afternoon on the Rialto Bridge – I almost hate Venice. Same day on the Fondamente Nove starting to stroll through Cannaregio and then taking a Vaporetto around – I love Venice so very much! Venezia – amore mio!
